1. Which version of the software should I use?
If you have purchased your Zt-2 system after
10/15/2009 or if you would like to log using more than one Zt-2 system then you must use
the version 3 software. The version 3 software
supports the new Model 2010 Zt-2 and all previous models of the Zt-2. To
download the latest version 3 software please visit the main
Zeitronix Data Logger software page.If you have purchased your Zt-2 system before 10/15/2009 then you may
also use either
version 2.0.18 or 2.0.10. Version 2.0.10 is only recommended for very slow
computers.
2. How do I run the install program?
If you are installing from a CD place the CD in the
drive and the installation should start automatically. If it does not
please double click the "My Computer" icon. Double click the CD
Rom drive which contains the installation disk. If installation does not
begin you may run the "Install.bat" file by double clicking on it. (For
version 2 double click the program setup.exe).
If you have downloaded a .zip file from the
Zeitronix website double click on the .zip file and extract the files to the
desktop. You can do this by dragging the internal folder to your desktop.
Next run the installation by double clicking on "Install.bat". (For
ZDL version 2 double click the program setup.exe).
To install ZDL version 3 run the setup.exe program.
Choose your language and the installation will begin.
3. What do I do if I don't have a serial port on my computer?
Automotive applications must contend with high
electrical noise environment thus use of RS232 (serial) communication standard
is preferable over home/office spec USB.
You can still find new "industrial spec" laptops with serial (COM port)
built in, but most new laptops are manufactured for office use and no longer supply a serial connector
but using a Serial to USB adapter will provide the necessary connectivity
without any negative effects on logging. Please see the next question for
information on determining what virtual Com Port is being used by your Serial to
USB adapter. These adapters can be found on our
order page. No particular brand of
Serial to USB adapter is required. If you have one already it will most
certainly work for this application.
4. How do I setup the serial to USB adapter?
Without connecting the Zeitronix device please
first follow the instructions which come with the Serial to USB adapter and
install the drivers required by it. If you bought the Serial to USB
adapter from Zeitronix you can download the drivers for it
here.
5. How do I setup the "Com Port" in the software?
ZDL v3.0.7 and later will automatically detect the
COM port used and begin logging automatically. This feature can be
disabled in the preferences. Please make sure the Zt-2 is powered and
connected in order to be automatically detected.
ZDL v3.0.6 through ZDL v3.0.1
After running the software use the menu items "Hardware" --> "Connect to
devices...". Next press "Scan for Zeitronix Devices". The last
line listed should give the com port number for any devices which were detected.
For Device 1 change the "Port" control to have the same com number as the
one detected. Make sure all other devices are off. Press OK.
In 2.0.X versions of the software...
First run the software by double clicking the "Zeitronix Data Logger" icon or
choose it from the "Start" menu under "Programs --> Zeitronix --> Zeitronix Data
Logger". Next choose the "Settings --> Plot Settings and Comm Port" from
the menu. The first control called "Comm Port" should be set as follows:
- For user with a Serial connection this should be set to Com1 or Com2.
- For users with a Serial to USB connection this value will be set to one
of Com3 through Com8.
For a walk through of finding out what comm port to use on your system
please see this page:
Determining your comm port...
6. What if the screen does not show any data?
Once the Zeitronix unit receives power there is a
warm up period for the sensor. After about 15 seconds data will begin
streaming from the Zt2. This data will then be visible on the LCD display
and available for logging through the serial cable.
With the software running and setup according to
question 5 above you can press the enter key to begin or end data logging.
If no data is logged and if you have an LCD or
ZR-1/ZR-2 gauge then connect this gauge directly to the data port of the
Zeitronix device. If this gauge does not light up then you unit is not
powered up. Please check your power and ground connections.
If this works or you do not have a display connect
the serial cable directly to the data port of the Zt-2. Double
check your power and ground connections. Check the yellow wire of the
signal harness for 5 Volt signal. If no signal is found please recheck
your power (RED wire) for 12V power and double check that your ground
connection (BLACK wire) is a clean good ground back. Please contact us at
sales@zeitronix.com for additional
assistance.
7. What should I do if the mouse jumps around when logging data?
Open the computer's "Control Panel". Use
System\Hardware\Device Manager\Mice and other pointing devices path to obtain
access to "Microsoft Serial Ballpoint" device. Use "Disable" via right
mouse button menu to disable use of this device. Windows will no longer
interpret the in coming serial data as a mouse.
The "mouse" detection can also be avoided by plugging in the USB to serial
adapter but do not power or do not connect the Zeitronix Wideband System.
Start up the Zeitronix Data Logger software first and then finally connect or
power up the Zt-2. This will prevent Windows from trying to use the
Zeitronix Wideband data.
